Tonight is the GHS Theatre Booster fundraiser "Dining to Donate" at the Azorean Restaurant, 133 Washington Street in Gloucester.

Come out for dinner between 4pm and 10pm with a flyer and 10% of your food purchase goes to support the GHS Theatre Arts Program!

The December Booster Meeting is also Tonight at 6:30pm. 
We will be meeting at the Azorean to discuss the success of Chemical Imbalance, preparation for Legally Blonde, the Spring Showcase, other Fundraising, and a trip to NYC next school year!

2014-2015 Sponsors and Ads

The GHS Theatre Program is still looking for Sponsors and Advertisements!

GHS Theatre is hard at work on our fall production, Chemical Imbalance: A Jekyll and Hide Play, which is a comedic take on the classic Robert Louis Stevenson story. Performances take place at GHS Auditorium November 21st @ 7pm, November 22nd @ 2pm & 7pm, and November 23rd @ 2pm.

But we can't do it without your support!

The GHS Theatre Program is looking for Program Ads and Sponsors. Advertisements will run in three programs (fall play, spring musical, and spring showcase.) In addition, sponsor names will be listed on our Sponsor Poster that will be displayed at all GHS Theatre events. This is a great exposure opportunity for your business and is very much appreciated.

Don't want to design an ad? Don't worry! 
We can create the ad from a business card, existing logo, or we can design new art for your ad. Just send us the information you'd like to appear, and we'll do the work from there. Another option is a text only One-Line advertisement!

Don't have a business but still want to support?
New this year, is our "Friends of GHS Theatre" list, a way for family and friends to easily support GHS Theatre! Want to say more? Consider the One-Line ad option to say what needs to be said.

Les Miserables Field Trip

The French Classes and Drama Classes will be taking a field trip to North Shore Music Theater next week for the matinee performance of "Les Miserables."

Any student in drama club wishing to get a ticket should speak to Ms. Ruggles ASAP. Students in the classes have first priority on tickets, and have until Friday, October 31st at 2:10pm to turn in their permission slip and money. After that, any extra ticket will be released to Drama Club. Students wishing to attend must have a completed permission slip and the money at this time!

On the way home from NSMT, the bus will be stopping at Panera Bread in Beverly to help support the Drama Club Fundraiser! Please make sure to bring money to grab dinner! We will have extra fliers!

    The Impact of Theatre on Students

    Gloucester Public Schools Assistant Superintendent Gregg Bach shared this article with Ms. Ruggles today. 

    Learning from Live Theater
    Students realize gains in knowledge, tolerance, and more

    The article discusses a study on the impact of theatre and other culturally enriching field trips on high school students during the 2013-2014 school year. The research was designed like a lottery system, where schools applied and were awarded free tickets to attend a professional production of Hamlet or A Christmas Carol. Students were then assessed on information regarding plot and vocabulary knowledge, tolerance, and the ability to read the emotions of others.

    Students who attended the performances estimated a 63% gain in knowledge on plot and vocabulary. Students who only read the material or saw a film version estimated a 58% knowledge gain. Students who were assigned readings of the plays or watched movie versions did no better on knowledge testing than other students.

    In tolerance of others, students who attended the performances were estimated at 26% more tolerant than students who simply read the material. Students who had not read the material were equally as tolerant as students who had read, and students who watched the movies were somewhat less tolerant.

    Regarding emotions, students who attended the live performances scored 23% better identifying emotions portrayed in photographs of eyes than students in the control group. Reading material or watching film did not substantially chance the ability to recognize emotions.

    Culturally enriching field trips matter to students. The benefits are significant in a variety of educational outcomes that schools and communities focus on. Live performance is an effective way to teach academic content, increase tolerance, and improve emotional recognition. Not all learning has to occur within the walls of a school building.

    GHS Theater Booster Meeting

    is the next GHS Theater Booster Meeting. We will be meeting at 6pm in the school cafeteria. We will discuss expectations for student involvement in the Drama Club, and how the Boosters are an essential part of supporting student interest in Theater Arts.

    If you are unable to make tonight's meeting, please check back here for notes regarding what was discussed.

    In addition, please check out the VolunteerSpot that has been set up to volunteer your time to the Drama Club. VolunteerSpot does not require you to create an account! You can simply sign up for an activity by submitting your email. Your email address will not get shared with anyone. It is only used by the Boosters to keep organize the volunteers for specific events.

    Ms. Ruggles has also created a Google Calendar to keep track of all the GHS Drama Club Events. This will include Booster Meetings, Performance Dates, and Fundraising Events. Specific calendars for rehearsals and set builds are available on the production page for that show.

    Fall Show Reminders!

    Hi Everyone!

    Just a few reminders regarding the fall show "Chemical Imbalance: A Jekyll and Hyde Play"

    --Anyone interested in being a Stage Manager or Student Designer (sets, lights, costumes, etc.) MUST submit an application by the end of the school day on THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 25th. If needed, interviews will take place on Friday, September 26th.

    --Perusal Scripts: I have copies of perusal scripts in my office. If you are interested in reading the play before auditions start, feel free to stop by my office to sign one out. If you have signed out a script, please return it in a timely manner so other students may sign them out to read!

    --Auditions: I've had a lot of you asking what will be involved in the auditions. Because this show is an ensemble comedy, that is what the basis of auditions will be: working in an ensemble to create a comedic story. And what better way to test that out than IMPROV GAMES! For those of you who "are bad" at improv, don't worry. We will be reading scenes from the script as well.

    --Tech Crew: If you are interested in participating in tech crew, you must come to the first set build rehearsal on FRIDAY, OCTOBER 3rd. Actors are welcome to come to this meeting as well. We will be discussing safety, handing out crew contracts, and organizing the scene shop so we can begin constructing asap.

    Fall Play Announcement!!!

    It is with great excitement and enthusiasm that Gloucester High Drama would like to announce their fall production of:

    Chemical Imbalance:
    A Jekyll and Hyde play
    by Lauren Wilson

    A darkly comic adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson's Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. In Victorian England, repressed impulses burst their corsets as Dr. Jekyll's experiments in the nature of evil threaten to reveal the bloody hands beneath the gloves of the British Empire. A fast-paces romp about men and women tightrope walking the line between aristocracy and depravity, and between the twin spectres of good and evil.

    The play is set in a Victorian England of the Imagination

    The twins are played by one actor.
    The older women (Mrs. Jekyll and Lady T) may be played by men.

    Scripts will be available in the drama office for students to sign out to read before auditions. Audition Sheets are available for students to fill out before arriving on Tuesday, September 30th or Wednesday, October 1st. In addition, students wishing to participate in the Student Production Team should fill out an application and return it to Ms. Ruggles no later than the end of the day on Thursday, September 25th.
